Julia & Jason
Jason and Julia began their dairy farm career in 2005 when Jason decided to leap into the dairy industry. From then Jason and Julia, along with their two children Riley and Pippa have steadily progressed in the industry and now successfully own and operate a large-scale farm in Balfour, Southland.
They have also ventured further and are trialling a share milking role for the 2019-2020 season. Jason and Julia are always up for a challenge and continually look for ways to progress in their business.
Jason and Julia are both very passionate about dairy farming and love what they do. They pride themselves on striving for excellence and consider themselves to be great employers, role models and friends to everyone who crosses their path.
Aside from lots of hard work, this little family of four enjoy taking some time out. They enjoy spending time boating, camping, tramping, going on winter holidays and being around family and friends.
Glendhu Dairies is an immaculate 550-hectare dairy farm located in Balfour. The contour of the land is flat to easy rolling, with beautiful views in every direction.
The dairy shed is an 80 bale rotary that is well equipped with cup removers, Protrack auto-draft, auto teat spray, a heat detection system as well as a meal and molasses feeding system. Having modern and up to date technology in the shed ensures that milking time operates efficiently.
The milking season begins at the start of August and runs through to the end of May. All cows are wintered off the farm at other locations with Southland. The milking herd, approximately 1300 cows are predominately Fresian.
There is a large feed pad that can house 500 cows comfortably. This is used during calving and well as times when supplementary feeding is required such as dry summers.
Glendhu Dairies own a modern fleet of New Holland tractors with various cultivation gear as well as triple mowers.
There are currently 5 full-time staff members who are enthusiastic, fun and very hard working. There are 2 full-time relief milkers as well as 2 calf rearers for the calving season.
